What to Watch For

Beware of birdhouses that look nice but are not designed to accommodate the needs of our flighty friends. They may be very decorative and look great but they generally do not have the practical requirements for use. They are generally designed as an out of doors decoration, and conversation piece.

Here are some things to stay away from in bird house designs:

  1. A dowel rod at the front of the house just below the opening has only one real purpose and that is to allow predators to get inside the house. The birds do not use it.
  2. Watch out for openings that do not have a predator block mounted on the face of the house. The added depth of the wall has a tendency to discourage predators.
  3. The floor height must be a certain distance down from the opening or the intended birds will not use the house.
  4. The floor must have holes in the corners to allow water that may seep into the structure to drain.
  5. Avoid bird house designs that have no way of cleaning the interior of the structure Bird houses must be cleaned out one to three times a year depending on the species of bird that nests in the house.
  6. Some birds need an interior ladder for baby birds to climb up and out, believe it or not!
  7. Bird houses require ventilation.
  8. Make sure you know what you are buying.
